Advanced car care for the passionate motorist
Everyone wants to make the most of their vehicle, yet this is often easier said than done. Apart from the basic checks that we all know need to be carried out, there are a huge number of others checks too. If you are curious to learn about some more advanced procedures, then this post is for you. We are going to have a look at some areas of car care which are usually less often discussed. If you want to get to know your car a lot better, then read on to find out how. Following these steps should ensure that your car lasts much longer than it would otherwise.
Coolant
One of the most important checks for just about any vehicle is the coolant. The coolant does what it says – it helps to keep the engine and the radiator cool. It is clear to see, then, that it is important to make sure it is at the right level. Too little, and your car could overheat in no time at all. People often think that this is difficult to get right, but the truth is it is just a matter of visually checking the level. Most manufacturers imprint low and full marks on the exterior, so it should be easy to tell. It is important not to open the radiator cap when it is hot, as it might be pressured. If the level is low, be sure to top it up. Doing this on a regular basis will help to keep your car running smoothly and at the proper temperature.
Transmission
One of the most complex parts of any vehicle is the transmission system. It can also be one of the most difficult parts to repair, so transmission repairs are best left to the professionals. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t learn how it works as best as you can so that you can take better care of it. This area does not require so much care as regularly as other parts of the car. The main thing you need to do is to keep an eye on the transmission fluid. Find out where the dipstick for the fluid is in your car, and check it carefully. If it needs topping up, then you can do that yourself. If there is something obviously, visually wrong with it, take it to get fixed as soon as possible. Leaving this kind of issue for too long could result in something more serious.
Brakes
It goes without saying that the brakes are hugely important for your car. But do you know how to spot any early problems, before they become bigger? There are some essential things to watch out for, and if you notice them you should get them looked at immediately. The most obvious is noise. If your brakes suddenly start screeching or grinding, this can be an early warning sign. Similarly, if your vehicle pulls to one side while braking, that is a clear sign not to be ignored. If your brake pedal has to touch the floor before engaging, then you should get it checked straight away.
