Thankfully, modern cars are packed with electronic driver aids designed to keep us safe when the weather becomes a challenge. But booking a 4×4 hire or driving a high-tech hatchback is only half of the equation; you also need to know exactly how these systems operate when things get slippery.

1. ABS, ESC, and TCS: The traction trifecta

When the road surface becomes slick, your tyres have to work twice as hard to keep you safely on the road. Three key chassis-control systems step in to prevent a slip from turning into a slide.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

In emergency stopping situations on wet roads, your wheels can easily lock up, causing the car to skid uncontrollably. ABS prevents this by rapidly pulsing the brakes, allowing you to maintain steering control under heavy braking. If you’re driving a modern vehicle, you don’t need to pump the pedal yourself; you can simply apply firm, steady pressure and let the system do the hard work.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

ESC is particularly vital in larger vehicles and SUVs, as it detects when the car is beginning to deviate from your steered path. By selectively applying the brakes to individual wheels, it helps steer the car back into line. It works by gently reducing engine power or applying the brakes on the slipping wheel.   • Adaptive headlights: Heavy rain drastically reduces your visibility when driving. If your vehicle is equipped with adaptive headlights, they will actively pivot with your steering to light up bends before you reach them. Always ensure your dipped headlights are manually switched on during heavy rain. Do not rely solely on automatic daytime running lights (DRLs), as these often leave your rear taillights unlit.
  • Rain-sensing wipers: These systems use optical sensors near the rearview mirror to detect moisture on the windscreen, then automatically adjust the wiper speed to match the rainfall. A buildup of road grime can confuse the sensor, leading to erratic wiper behaviour. To prevent that, the system also ensures that your windscreen is regularly cleaned to keep the wipers running smoothly.
  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS): Features like lane departure warning and blind-spot monitoring are incredibly useful in poor visibility. However, heavy rain or road spray can sometimes temporarily block the radar sensors or cameras. If the system warns you of a sensor obstruction, use your mirrors and physically observe your surroundings.

  • Reduce your speed: Dropping your speed gives you more time to react to unexpected hazards.
  • Double your distance: Wet tarmac can double your stopping distance, so leave a generous gap to the vehicle ahead.
  • Avoid standing water: Keep an eye out for deep puddles to reduce the risk of aquaplaning (where your tyres lose contact with the road entirely).

Ultimately, the safety features packed into modern vehicles are brilliant tools, but they are designed to assist the driver, not replace them. Electronic aids cannot override the physical laws of gravity and friction.
