How does your car’s ECU affect performance?

  • Regulation of idle speed – The engine control unit makes use of sensors monitors that are located in a crankshaft position. This allows the ECU to regulate idle speed effectively.
  • Valve timing – The same sensors which were just mentioned also allow the engine control unit to control and manage valve timing as well. This is important because it ensures that the opening and closing of the poppet valves is done at the right time.
  • Optimise fuel economy and power output – Earlier in the blog post, it was revealed that the engine control unit can control and manage ignition timing. This is what allows you to optimise both power output and fuel economy as well. It does this via altering the spark timing that is needed when the combustion process starts. When it comes to dealing with fuel management and ensuring the correct mixture ratio, there are so many different variables your ECU will deal with. This includes engine pumping efficiency, air pressure, varying filter restriction, fuel quality, fuel temperature, air temperature, engine/coolant temperature, and engine demand. The ECU holds the key to how your car runs and performs.
