Steer clear; some of the most unreliable cars on the road

When you are driving to the grocery store; driving to work; going to pick up the dry-cleaning for your mother; or simply going to the cinema to see “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”; the last thing you want is to run into car trouble. If you have purchased any of the cars listed below however, it is highly likely that you will. For reasons unknown, the world’s biggest car manufacturers decided to develop these cars. The cars that will drive you to insanity instead of the local shops.

So while reading this list, be prepared to open a new tab, go on whocanfixmycar.com UK site, and then put your local mechanic’s phone number onto your speed dial list. You own one of these cars, you will most certainly need him/her.

Skoda Superb

The irony of the name of the Skoda Superb is likely lost on the owners of the car company. There is an explicit reason why a car called the “Superb” is on the list of the most unreliable cars on the road today. The Skoda Superb’s average breakdown rate per year is a painful 55%; that is one in every two on the road today. A major problem with these breakdowns is that fact that they tend to be due to expensive issues. The most common faults in the car tend to be suspension and axle problems; two expensive issues to fix. Happily the new platform for the Superb seems to be much better, so if you’ve bought a newer Superb you needn’t worry.

Renault Megane

Do you remember the advertising campaign for this car? It was a home run. One of the main reasons we have seen so many of these cars in our local car parks, driving on motorways etc. over the past decade is largely due to this advertisement campaign. However, the consumers who were enticed by these ads, undoubtedly regret their decision to purchase a Renault Megane. The Megane has a 56% average breakdown rate per year; making the car one of the most infuriating cars produced during the 21st century.

Fiat 500L

The Fiat 500L is irritatingly unreliable. Essentially all the mod cons which would sway to take the leap and purchase this small SUV – satellite navigation, reverse cameras and sensors and high-tech radio – all have tendency to not work. That being said, the “Fix It Again Tomorrow” jokes surrounding the Fiat brand do seem to be calming down; under Fiat-Chrysler Automotive ownership both build quality and reliability are on the up. So it’s not all bad.

Vauxhall Vectra

The Vauxhall Vectra is yet another hugely popular car that has proven itself to be wholly unreliable over the years. With a 57% average breakdown rate per year, and common suspension issues, the Vectra has been the bane of many a man and woman’s life since its introduction to the market. Although, when you think about it, it’s not hard to undestand why the Vectra would break down. Given that it was always a favourite of the sales rep, up and down the M6 at a billion miles per hour, there are undoubtedly a few ‘tired’ Vectras out there.

Renault Espace

Judging by this list, if you own a Renault: you should be worried. The Renault Espace is another car produced by the French car manufacturing company that has been notoriously unreliable over the past decade. The Espaces’ average breakdown rate per year will make you wonder: how did Renault ever believe that this car was road ready? Its average breakdown rate per year is 74%. Yes: 74%. Three-out-of-four Renault Espaces’ on the road are expected to breakdown this year.
