5 Simple DIY vehicle repairs

When something goes wrong with a vehicle, most people respond by taking it to the local garage for maintenance. However, garages can e expensive, and money is tight these days, so why not carry out simple repairs yourself, allowing you to save money and learn about the car?

Replace air filter

When you’re driving, air moves through the engine bringing with it tiny particles that can damage the system and lead to expensive repairs. The air filter is a serviceable item that should be replaced at regular intervals, a mechanic will charge you for it, but it’s also a simple DIY task.

The air filter is a large rectangular item located near the top of the car engine. The air filter is normally written on the casing and enclosed with a few screws. Changing the air filter is as simple as undoing the screws and replacing an old one with a new one for a fraction of the cost.

Change car tyre

We’ve all had the experience of a flat tyre in the morning on our way to work or at an important social event. There is never a convenient time to get a flat, so you need to be prepared. The good news is that changing a car tyre is quite straightforward when you have the right toolset.

The first task is to remove the wheel nuts and then the wheel; this can be difficult if the wheel nuts are rusted or you don’t have the right toolkit. Look into Locking Wheel Nut Removal so you are prepared for any situation. When the wheel is removed, simply replace it with a space saver.

Repair body work

Now and again, the bodywork of your car can be damaged by stones on the road, other vehicles, or clumsy driving. It’s frustrating when it happens because a garage or an insurance company will charge for full panel replacement instead of carrying out a simple surface repair.

If you want to save a significant sum of money and enjoy the satisfaction of repairing the vehicle’s bodywork yourself, you are in the right place. Surface scratches can be removed with a product called T-Cut, and small dents are repaired using a hairdryer and cold air compressor.

Inflate car tyres

When car tyres are not inflated to their correct levels, it affects the traction of the vehicle when driving; it also affects the fuel consumption of the car, making driving even more expensive overall. If you want to be an efficient road user, you need to make sure you inflate car tyres.

Every vehicle has a user’s manual – normally located in the glove box – this manual tells you the correct air pressure values for your vehicle so that it runs efficiently and optimally. Make a point of checking your air pressure at the garage at least once a month for the most efficient driving.

Replace fluids

Again, fluid levels are a serviceable item, but you can check them yourself and top them up as needed. The main fluids you will need to monitor are the coolant fluids, the water levels, and the oil levels. Topping up the fluids regularly ensures that your engine runs smoothly and optimally.
