Mercedes Benz’s electrifying EQS SUV

Mercedes Benz is currently in the rather difficult process of transforming itself into an all-electric car company. It knows that if it wants to avoid destroying the planet and potentially all life on Earth, it has to start using battery packs, not fossil fuels.

Unfortunately, this task seemed too challenging for the German manufacturer for most of the last decade. EVs only made up a tiny proportion of its sales. And big brands, like Tesla, took the lion’s share of the market.

For Mercedes, and German automakers in general, it was a tough learning curve. Many simply didn’t have the capital structure or expertise to churn out new electric vehicles reliably. Tesla and China’s equivalent had lapped up all the global talent to make it happen.

But things don’t stay consistent in markets for long. An old heavyweight, Mercedes is punching back, learning from its past mistakes and creating better EVs with every passing year. Even Mercedes Benz specialists are impressed at how fast the company is moving.

The EQS is arguably the firm’s most impressive EV yet. This imposing SUV is confidence-inspiring and comes with all of the perks you’d expect from a premium German brand like Mercedes.

Mercedes is keen to build as much predictability into the EQS SUV as in its other lines. Just as C-class and E-class vehicles all evolved based on previous designs, the EQS will build on the old EQE sedan format and previous SUVs from the company. The firm wants it to feel like drivers are piloting a Mercedes, not something strange and new they haven’t come across before.

As a vehicle, the EQS SUV feels much grander than previous models. It’s bigger, airier, and lighter-feeling than many other electric vehicles in its class. And because of the driver setup, the cabin is particularly spacious. It feels more like stepping into a pod or photobooth than a standard vehicle. The floors are beautifully flat, and you have a lot of space in the rear.

Conveniently for drivers, the EQS SUV’s dashboard is reassuringly similar to the EQS Sedan. Even the colours feel familiar.

The vehicle’s design choices are interesting. Mercedes is keen to make the new car look as futuristic as possible, emphasising the fact that it is an EV and ready for the next generation of transport. For a traditionally conservative company, this is an interesting design choice. Unlike Tesla which is actually quite minimalist in its approach, Mercedes is surprisingly outgoing. On the inside of the vehicle, you’ll find brightly colored plastic segments and chrome knobs all over the place. In a way, it is quite retro

The rear entertainment system is another welcome feature of the vehicle. This setup makes it ideal for families with young children. Even if you’re driving for hours, there’s plenty you can do to keep them happy and entertained. Boredom should be a thing of the past.

In summary, the new EQS delivers where some of Mercedes’s older vehicles fell short. The only problem is the £90,000+ price tag for the entry-level vehicle.
